Born in London he attended the design classes at the South Kensington Schools before working in the studio of Edwin Long and subsequently studying in Paris under Bouguereau and Robert Fleury.

He became one of the foremost modern British painters of landscape and peasant life, being influenced by the artists of the Hague School and his French contemporaries, especially Bastien-Lepage.  An exponent of plein air painting, he spent much time making studies of farm land and those worked in the country.

Clausen was elected ARA in 1895 and RA in 1906.  He was knighted in 1927.
