Joseph Edward Southall, RWS, NEAC, RSBA
(1861-1944)
Study after a copy of Vittore Carpaccio’s St George Baptizing the Seleites
Inscribed and dated l.r.:
Copy of / Copy / Carpaccio / Sheffield / Museum / 22.VII.85
Watercolour over traces of pencil, unframed
16.5 by 10 cm., 6 ½ by 4 in.
As Southall inscription states, this is a study taken from a copy of Vittore Carpaccio’s “St George Baptizing the Selenites” from the Scuola Dalmata, Venice. Southall may have seen a copy of the Carpaccio series while visiting Sheffield’s Guild of St George. His uncle, George Baker, had been an early patron of Ruskin’s Guild which was intended to introduce arts and crafts education to the workmen and labourers of Britain.
