John Stanton Ward (1917 - 2007)

England Ward was born in Hereford, where his father, Russell Stanton Ward, ran an antiques shop and restored paintings. He studied at the Hereford School of Arts and Crafts before winning a place to the Royal College of Art in 1936, where he studied under Gilbert Spencer, Charles Mahoney and Alan Sorrell and won the prize for drawing. During World War II he served in the Royal Engineers, using his drawing skills to design pillboxes, and later taking part in the D-Day landings. He was posted to Belgium after the war before returning to the Royal College to graduate in 1946.Ward worked as a painter, illustrator and teacher, happy to work in oils, watercolour, pastel and pen and ink. He painted portraits, landscapes, interiors and architectural subjects, undertaking portraits of members of the royal family, businessmen and celebrities including the Princess of Wales, the Princess Royal and the christenings of Prince William and Prince Harry. Fifteen of his portraits are in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery and he held one man shows at Agnew’s and the Maas Gallery. As a prolific illustrator he worked on guides to Herefordshire and North Yorkshire and produced illustrations for Vogue magazine from 1948 to 1952 and illustrated many books including Laurie Lee’s Cider with Rosie (1959) and H E Bates’s The Darling Buds of May (1958). As a teacher he gave lessons in drawing to the Prince of Wales and taught at for a time at Wimbledon School of Art.In 1956 he became an associate member of the Royal Academy, being elected a full member in 1966. He was a Trustee of the Royal Academy from 1985 to 1993. In 1997 he resigned from the Royal Academy in protest at the Sensation exhibition and never rejoined. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Watercolour Society, Royal Society of Portrait Painters and elsewhere and is represented in many public collections.

The lengthy religious poem Jubilat Agno (Rejoice in the Lamb) was written by Christopher Smart between 1759 and 1763 during the poet’s confinement for insanity in St Luke’s Hospital, Bethnal Green, London. The poem was not published until 1939. Benjamin Britten used it as a source for his choral piece Rejoice in the Lamb in 1943.

Richard Hubbard Arroll was born in Glasgow and studied at Glasgow School of Art. Whilst at the school he studied painting and metal work, a brass candlestick by him being held in the in collection of Glasgow School of Art. He exhibited landscapes oil paintings at the Royal Scottish Academy, Glasgow Institute and the Paris Salon. In 1916 he enlisted with the Seaforth Highlanders and was sent to France, sadly dying of his wounds after the Battle of Arras in 1917.

Born in Russia, the son of an English father and a Russian mother, he grew up in Western Europe and South Africa before returning to Russian at the age of 17. He studied art and architecture at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg before further studies in Paris. He worked as an architect in Moscow creating and distinctive oeuvre of Art Nouveau buildings, the largest and best known being the Metropol Hotel. In 1906 he moved to London where he became one of the most prominent architectural draughtsmen of the 1920s and 1930s. He was elected to the Royal Society of British Artists in 1913, an associate of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engraves in 1916 and a Fellow of the RIBA in 1922. He was also an associate of the British School at Rome. His successful practice failed with the outbreak of World War II and in 1943 he committed suicide.

A sculptor, draughtsman and painter in oil and watercolour. Born in London, Dobson first studied at Leyton School of Art and later at the City and Guilds School, Kennington. During World War I he enlisted in the Artists’ Rifles and continued working - his large oil The Balloon Apron was acquired by the Imperial War Museum. After the war Dobson met Wyndham Lewis and exhibited with Group X in 1920 and he held his first one-man show as a sculptor at the Leicester Galleries in 1921. During the interwar Dobson consolidated his reputation as a sculptor and together with Epstein was call “a keeper of tradition” – bridging classical and modern sculpture. In 1946 Dobson was appointed professor of Sculpture at the

John da Costa was born in Teignmouth, Devon and brought up in the Channel Islands. He went to school in Millbrook, Hampshire before going on to study art in Paris and London. After a time in Newlyn he established himself in London as a society portraitist, making several trips to New York to paint his affluent American sitters.

Frank Lewis Emanuel (1865 - 1948)

United Kingdom Frank L. Emanuel, deeply occupied with art, worked as painter, illustrator, printer and art critic. He studied in London at the Slade School under Legros and later at the Academie Julian in Paris. He exhibited from 1881 at the Royal Academy in London and in the Salons of Paris. He traveled widely in Europe, South Africa and Ceylon. He staged watercolour exhibitions and published articles on topographical subjects in the Architectural Review and Manchester Guardian, and Illustrations de Montmartre. He taught etching at the Central School between 1918 and 1930 and one of his paintings can be found in the Tate Gallery.

Emanuel was born and lived in London where he studied at the Slade under Alphonse Legros before further studies at the Academie Julian, Paris. From the late 1880s he began to show at the Royal Academy and Paris Salon, also exhibiting at the New English Art Club and elsewhere. He travelled widely in Europe, Africa and Ceylon. He became chief examiner for the Royal Drawing Society and published a number of books on etching and general art criticism. He is represented in the collection of the Tate Gallery, London. The sitter is Archibald Standish Hartrick, RWS, OBE (1864-1950) who was a fellow Slade student with Emanuel. They also both studied at the Julian in Paris and this portrait dates to this time. During his stay in France he became friends with Gauguin, van Gough and Toulouse-Lautrec. Returning to the UK he worked as an illustrator and taught drawing at Camberwell School of Art and worked as a watercolour artist exhibiting in London and elsewhere. During World War I he contributed the British War Memorials Committee collection and during World War II he contributed to the Recording Britain Scheme.

Edward Julius Detmold (1883 - 1957)

Edward Detmold and his twin brother Charles Maurice Detmold (1883-1908) were outstanding book illustrators. Due to the frail health of their father they were brought up by their uncle and guardian, Dr Edward Barton Shuldham who introduced the boys to his own interests in natural history and Japanese art and encouraged them in their artistic pursuits, helping to produce their first book, Pictures from Birdland, in 1899. The twins first exhibited watercolours at the Royal Academy and Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours when in their early teens and held their first solo exhibition at the Fine Art Society in 1900. They also mastered the techniques of watercolour etching and colour printing, having their own printing press at home. One of their first major commissions was the enormously popular set of 16 watercolours for Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book, published in 1903 by Macmillan. Maurice tragically committed suicide in 1908 and although stunned by the death of his twin Edward threw himself into his work. In 1909 he illustrated The Fables of Aesop for Hodder & Stoughton. This was followed by numerous other commissions resulting in Edward Julius Detmold being one of the most successful illustrators of his day. After a period of depression brought on my failing eye-sight he committed suicide himself in 1957.

George Denholm Armour (1864 - 1949)

Scotland George Denholm Armour, animal painter and cartoonist, was born at Waterside, Lanarkshire on the 30th January 1864. After attending St Andrews University, he moved to Edinburgh, where he studied at the School of Art and the RSA Schools. It was through the RSA that he met Robert Alexander and travelled with him to Tangiers in 1885 to paint and also to buy cheap horses, only returning when their money ran out. It was on a subsequent expedition to Tangiers that he met Joseph Crawhall, who remained a great friend until the latter’s untimely death in 1913. Both hunting mad, upon their return to England the two friends ran a stud together at Wheathampstead, Hertfordshire, where Crawhall continued to influence his friend’s work. The household only broke up when Armour married, with Crawhall standing as his best man.Although always a fine draughtsman, it was after he met Crawhall that Armour developed the subtle but strong drawing style seen in his work for Punch and other publications. He was first illustrated in The Graphic in 1890, while sharing a studio with Phil May in London, and from 1894 concentrated largely on his cartoon work. He contributed to Punch for 35 years, although never entirely abandoning his hunting and shooting watercolours and washes. He was appointed OBE in 1919, following his command of the army’s remount depot in Salonika.His love of the outdoors, horses and his work are interwoven. When hunting he always carried a sketch book, while his total commitment to his horses led to his converting half his studio into a stable. It is this great enthusiasm which lends so many of his animal portrayals their power and flowing movement, just as his sense of humour, wit and keen observation of outdoor pursuits give his cartoon illustrations their appeal. Caw states that in comparison to the works of other exponents of the pictured ‘sporting joke’, in ‘draughtsmanship and design they are incomparably finer.’

GEORGE DENHOLM ARMOUR, RSA, OBE (British 1864-1949)

Armour was born in Waterside, Lanarkshire and studied at St Andrews University, Edinburgh School of Art and the Royal Scottish Academy Schools. He was a close friend of Joseph Crawhall and visited Tangiers with him and Robert Alexander in the 1880s. In the 1890s he settled in London, sharing a studio for some time with Phil May and becoming a regular contributor of illustrations for Punch, The Tatler, Country Life and The Graphic as well as illustrating many sporting books. In 1910, he studied military equestrianism at the Spanish Riding School in Vienna. During the First World War he commanded the depot of the Army remount service and from 1917 to 1919 served with the Salonika Force. By the end of the war he was the Director of Remounts in that area and was awarded the OBE for his services. He worked in oil, watercolour and pastel, painting sporting subjects and exhibiting at the Royal Academy, Royal Scottish Academy and elsewhere and later lived in Malmesbury, Wiltshire. Works by him are in the collections of Aberdeen Art Gallery, the National Galleries of Scotland and in other private and public collections.

Born Albert Daniel Rothenstein, he was the youngest of the six children of Moritz and Bertha Rothenstein, German-Jewish immigrants who had settled in Bradford, Yorkshire in the 1860s. He and his siblings proved to be a hugely talented and artistic family, his elder brother became Sir William Rotherstein (1872-1945), the artist and director of the Royal College of Art; two of his other siblings, Charles Rutherston and Emily Hesslein, both accumulated major modern British and French art collections and his nephew Sir John Rothenstein was direct of the Tate Gallery. He was educated at Bradford Grammar School before moving to London in 1898 to study at the Slade School of Art where he became close friends with Augustus John and William Orpen. He met Walter Sickert during a painting holiday in France in 1900 and by introducing Sickert to Spencer Gove became instrumental in the beginning of the Camden Town Group. He was one of Sickert’s most frequent companions and was one of the original members of the Fitzroy Street Group Rutherston had a sociable and attractive personality, he frequently travelled abroad with other artists including Max Beerbohm, Spencer Gore, Walter Russell and Edna Clarke Hall. It was Clarke Hall who introduced him to watercolour painting and in 1910, while in Grasse on the France Riviera with the artist Gerald Chowne, he tried his hand at watercolour painting on silk, a technique most famously used by his friend Charles Conder. These watercolour lead to his first solo exhibition at the Carfax Gallery in October1910. In 1911 he collaborated with the English dramatist and director, Harley Granville-Barker, to design costumes for Granville-Barker’s innovative production of Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale, performed at the Savoy Theatre in 1912. At the outbreak of World War I he was initially assigned a desk job with the Engineers’ War Service Register at the Board of Trade and from October 1916 he served with the Northamptonshire Regiment in Egypt and Palestine. At this time he he anglicised his surname as a declaration of patriotism to the country of his birth. Following the war he returned to his artistic career and married the actress, Marjory Holman. He took a number of teaching posts, starting at Camberwell School of Art and later becoming Ruskin Master of Drawing in 1929. At the same time his own work flourished when he was recruited as an illustrator by the Curwen Press along with Claud Lovat Fraser and Paul Nash. In 1938 he largely returned to oil painting. Rutherston became a member of the New English Art Club in 1905, a member of the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours in 1942 and was also a regular exhibitor at the Cheltenham Group. Examples of his work are in the collections of the Tate Gallery, Victoria & Albert Museum Ashmolean Museum, Bradford Art Gallery Manchester City Art Gallery and elsewhere. This work comes from the collection of Gloria, Countess of Bathurst (1927-2018) whose first marriage had been to David Rutherston, the son of Albert and Marjory Rutherston.

 Huggins was born in Liverpool and studied at the Liverpool Mechanics’ Institution, exhibiting work at the Liverpool Academy of Arts from an early age. Largely and animal painter, he drew from life, sketching the animals in Liverpool’s zoo, Wombwell’s Traveling Menagerie and the many pets and domestic animals in his own household. In addition to his animal subjects, he also painted landscapes and literary themes from Milton, Shelley and Spenser, although the subjects invariably included an animal. He exhibited Androcles and the Lion at the Royal Academy in 1846 and thereafter becoming a regular exhibitor both in London and in other major UK venues. He became a member of the Liverpool Academy in 1850. Examples of his work are in many public collections throughout the UK.

Godfrey Penington Kingdon was born in London in 1896, the son of a barrister. During World War I he served in the Machine Gun Corp. After some years in India he returned to live in London, retiring to Winchester in the late 1930s were he lived at 3 Normans, Norman Road, Winchester. Godfrey was a keen aviator, being a member of the Hampshire Aeroplane Club. He also painted a number of aviation subjects.

 Taylor studied at Sheffield College of Art, 1936-39 and at the Royal College of Art, 1939-43. He then taught at Sheffield College of Art where in 1963 he established the History of Art Department. He was Dean of the Faculty of Art and Design at Sheffield Polytechnic, 1972-75. He organized major shows of Aubrey Beardsley and Edward Burne-Jones at the Mappin Art Gallery and made a film Portrait of Beardsley. Taylor exhibited at the Royal Academy, New English Art Club, Leicester and Redfern Galleries and overseas.

 The painter and illustrator Michael B. Critchlow (known as “Jerry”) was born in Wolverhampton as Bernard Critchlow Green. He attended Wolverhampton School of Art, studying under Robert J. Emerson and became a freelance illustrator in the 1930s. At the end of the war, he produced posters for the Ministry of Information and this led to illustration work for magazines and periodicals, including Woman, Woman’s Own, The Strand, Britannia and Eve and John Bull. He returned to formal painting and, within a few years, his works were being exhibited the Royal Academy, Royal Society of Portrait Painters, New English Art Club and Royal Institute of Oil Painters. He spent most of his time in London but lived in Berkhamstead briefly and also in Brixham.

Gilbert Joseph Holiday (1879 - 1937)

Gilbert Holiday was the son of Sir Frederick Holiday and nephew of Henry Holiday, the painter and stained-glass designer. His early years were spent in St John’s Wood where he would have been familiar with the horses and troops of the Royal Horse Artillery. He was educated at Westminster before attending the Royal Academy Schools and first worked as an illustrator for The Graphic, Tatler and The Illustrated London News. At this time he shared a studio with Lionel Edwards who said of Holiday “no one can, or ever could, paint a horse in action better that Gilbert could.”

In 1908 he married Mina Spencer of Guernsey. At the First World War he worked as a war artist for The Graphic before being commissioned into the Royal Field Artillery as a Forward Observation Officer in 1915. Later appointed as Reconnaissance Officer, he was allowed to draw across the 8th Corps area and prepared a number of artillery panoramas, several of which were later purchased by The Imperial War Museum (now believed lost). He played an active part in drawing up plans of enemy positions, often venturing into No Man’s Land with his sketchbook.

Holiday left the army in 1919. His work continued to appear regularly in Tatler and Illustrated London News, although he now became a well-respected equestrian artist and illustrator, painting every kind of equine subject including hunting, racing, polo, coaching, working horses and show jumping. He was also popular for Regimental commissions. Being equally confident working in oil, watercolour, pastel or pencil, he was considered on the outstanding equestrian artists of his day. A keen hunting man, Holiday had a serious fall in 1932, crushing his spinal cord. He never walked again and although paralysed below the waist he continued to paint until his death in 1937.

He trained at the Byam Shaw School of Art and the Royal Academy Schools where he was awarded a Landseer Scholarship, Creswick Prize and Silver Medal for painting. Best known for his portraits and landscapes of the Suffolk coast, Greenham delighted in capturing outdoor scenes of English social life.rnrnHe exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy, New English Art Club, London Group, Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Society of Portrait Painters. Works by him are in many public collections.

Arthur Wardle was born in London. He first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1880 when he was aged only 16 and thereafter was a regular and frequent exhibitor there and at many other London and provincial venues. His early work seemed to concentrate on landscape and rustic scenes and it was not until the 1890s that he began to explore the subject matter for which he was to become so famous, namely domestic and wild animals, and big cats in particular. He soon established a reputation for exhibiting large mythological and dramatic subjects which gave him the opportunity to include lions, tigers, leopards and occasionally even polar bears. Wardle lived in St John’s Wood. Here he was close to London Zoo, which provided him with the chance to study his subjects closely. As a regular visitor to the zoo he made numerous sketches that he would then use to work on in the large canvases in his studio.

Raymond Booth (1929 - 2015)

EnglandRaymond Booth trained at Leeds College of Art during the late 1940s and early 50s. He is well known as a painter of botanical and natural history subjects, and also as a gardener and cultivator of exotic and rare species of flowers. As a result Booth is able to create such detailed paintings, as he knows every plant, understands it, and he appreciates its individuality.

Raymond Booth studied at Leeds College of Art 1946-48 and 1950-52, having taken a break for National Service. A painter of closely observed botanical works he first submitted pictures for exhibition at the Royal Horticultural Society and at Walker’s Gallery, Bond Street before he held his first of several solo shows at the Fine Art Society in 1962. A retrospective exhibition was held in 2002 and a memorial exhibition was held at the Fine Art Society in 2015. He has illustrated several books including The Camellia (1956 & 1962) and Japonica Magnifica (1992).

 Kathleen Irene Nixon was born in London and studied at Camden School of Art and Birmingham School of Art. After her marriage she lived in India for 25 years, where she illustrated for the Times of India, designed 30 nature posters for the Indian State Railways, painted horse portraits and a mural of wild duck for the Bombay Natural History Museum. She also decorated the interior of a maharaja’s private home. After returning to England, she wrote and illustrated numerous children’s animal stories and painted animal portraits. Perhaps her best-known illustrations were for the Brer Rabbit series and her covers for Enid Blyton books. She was elected a member of the Society of Women Artists.

Sims was born in Islington and studied at South Kensington, the Academie Julian, Paris and at the Royal Academy Schools. He first made his name at a one-man show at the Leicester Galleries in 1906 and he was elected ARA in the following year. In 1908 The Fountain was bought by the Chantrey Bequest and other works are now in public collections in this country and overseas. In 1918 he was appointed a war artist and sent to France. On his return he was made Keeper of the Royal Academy Schools, 1920-1926. Sims exhibited widely during his lifetime, sending a total of 116 works at the Royal Academy alone, however, he never recovered for the loss of his son in the First World War and took his own life in 1928. A copy of this rare print is in the collection of the British Museum. Sims made an oil painting of the same subject.

Frank Henry Watkins was born in Lambeth, London and was the son of a bank clerk. He worked as a children’s book and comic illustrator in the early 20th century, drawing for many children’s stories including Dolly Twoshoes (1901); The Wonder and Dolly Daydream (1902); Illustrated Chips and Dick and Daisy (1919-1921) and also for Merry Moments. He provided book illustrations for The Man From the Moon by Philip Carmichael (1909); The Sun’s Babies by Edith Howes (1910); The King Who Never Died: Tales of King Arthur by Dorothy Senior (1910) and Fairy Rings by Edith Howes (1911). In the 1920s he contributed as a writer and illustrator to a large number of Blackie’s special publications for children including My Own Big Book, My Own Picture Story Book, The Rainy Day Book and others. Watkins lived at 64 Waldegrave Park, Twickenham.

The present work shows Birdie, the artist’s wife. It would have been drawn shortly after they were married in 1913. Randolph Schwabe was born in Eccles, Manchester, the son of a German born cotton merchant. He initially studied at the Royal College of Art but after a short time transferred to the Slade. In 1904 he won the Slade Scholarship and in 1905 won the college Summer Competition. In 1906, a Slade scholarship allowed hi to study at the Academie Julian, Paris before travelling to Italy. Unable to enlist due to poor health he was an official War Artist during World War I. After the war he initially worked as a theatrical designer and book illustrator he began teaching at Camberwell and Westminster Schools of Art. He was then drawing master at the Royal College of Art before succeeding Henry Tonks as Slade Professor and head of the Slade School of Art in 1930. In 1941 he jointed the committee of the War Artists’ Advisory Committee. A prolific exhibitor at the New English Art Club and Goupil Gallery, also showing at Carfax Gallery, Fine Art Society, Leicester Galleries and Royal Watercolour Society. Examples of his work are in the collections of the Tate Gallery, Imperial War Museum and elsewhere.

 Carolyn Cann studied at Wimbledon School of Art (1955-59) and at the Royal Academy Schools (1959-62) where she was a Silver Medallist. At the Royal Academy Schools she met and later married her fellow student, John Sergeant. She had several one-man exhibitions in London, at the Fine Art Society, Colnaghi, Hazlitt, Gooden & Fox, the Waterhouse Gallery and Waterman Gallery. She also showed at the Leicester Galleries, Roland, Browse and Delbanco and elsewhere. In 1983 John and Carolyn bought an old run down farmhouse near Builth Wells in Powys, mid Wales. The house needed such extensive renovation that it took many years to complete. After their two sons had grown and left home she was able to devote more of her time to her painting, often specializing in beautifully composed and studied still life studies.

Arthur Wardle was born in London. He first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1880 when he was aged only 16 and thereafter was a regular and frequent exhibitor there and at many other London and provincial venues. His early work seemed to concentrate on landscape and rustic scenes and it was not until the 1890s that he began to explore the subject matter for which he was to become so famous, namely domestic and wild animals, and big cats in particular. He soon established a reputation for exhibiting large mythological and dramatic subjects, which gave him the opportunity to include lions, tigers, leopards and occasionally even polar bears.

Shackleton was born in Bradford, the son of a paper manufacturer and merchant. He attended Bradford Grammar School and then studied art at Bradford Technical College. He won a Royal Exhibition to study at the Royal College of Art in 1893. He travelled to France and Italy on a British Institute Scholarship and spent a time in Paris where he studied at the Academie Julian. On his return to Britain he initialled settled in Sussex where he worked with his friend Edward Stott and the small artistic group that gathered around him in the South Downs village of Amberley. In 1905 he moved to Fulham, London where he shared a studios with Philip Connard and Oliver Onions, although he still spent his summers with Stott in Sussex.

 He exhibited at the Royal Academy, 1895-1919, the New English Art Club, 1901-33 and at many other venues. His first one-man show was held at the Goupil Gallery in 1910, a retrospective exhibition was held at the Leicester Galleries in 1922 and a memorial exhibition was held at Cartwright Hall, Bradford in 1933. Works by him are in the collection of the Tate Gallery, York, Bradford, Manchester and elsewhere.

Helen Allingham (nee Paterson) was born near Burton-on-Trent, Derbyshire, and received her training as an artist at the Birmingham School of Design and Royal Academy Schools. She began her career as an illustrator for The Graphic and the Cornhill magazines; she also produced colour illustrations for a number of books. For a time she shared a house with Kate Greenaway in Hampstead, London, and the two women went on painting excursions together.

In 1874 Helen married the Irish poet William Allingham, a close friend of Rossetti, which enabled her to enter the closed circle of the Pre-Raphaelites. She edited for publication her husband’s diary, which was published in 1907 and contains many interesting reminiscences of Tennyson, Carlyle and other well known contemporaries, including John Ruskin, who wrote kindly of her work in his book The Art of England, 1884. In 1881 the Allinghams moved to Witley in Surrey, where Birket Foster was living. Rapidly becoming friends, the two painters began to make Witley a centre for rural artists. William Allingham died in 1889, but his wife remained in Witley. She worked continuously until her death, painting studies of rural cottages and country gardens, recording the changing rural lifestyles. She supplied colour illustrations for a number of books:

Eileen Soper (1905 - 1990)

Eileen Alice Soper (Municipal Borough of Enfield, 26 March 1905 ”“ 18 March 1990) was an English etcher and illustrator of children's and wildlife books. She produced a series of etchings mainly of children playing and illustrated books for other writers, notably for Enid Blyton and Elizabeth Gould, and wrote and illustrated her own children's book. Some of her illustrations of children and animals were used in a china series for children by Paragon China in the 1930s. Later in life she concentrated on writing and illustrating wildlife books. She was a founder member of the Society of Wildlife Artists (SWLA) and was elected a member of the Royal Society of Miniature Painters, Sculptors and Gravers (RMS) in 1972.

Eileen Soper was born in 1905 in Enfield1] and moved to the house that she was to spend the rest of her life in Harmer Green, Welwyn in the Hertfordshire countryside in 1908. The house she later named 'Wildings' was built by her father, the artist George Soper, and Eileen and her older sister, the artist Eva, inherited the house after his death in 1942 and lived there for the rest of their lives. Her work was popular and well received and shown in the UK and the USA.

Today Eileen Soper is best known for her collaboration with Enid Blyton, most notably all of the Famous Five books.

Eileen Soper also published her own children's books in the 1940s, a book of poetry and from the 1950s on worked mostly on her wildlife illustrations of British wildlife around her house in Welwyn. 

  Both Eileen and her sister Eva lived in Wildings until they fell ill at similar times, both passing away in 1990.

Gertrude Ellen Demain Hammond was born in Brixton. She studied at Lambeth School of Art followed by the Royal Academy Schools where she won a prize in 1889. She became a full time artist working as an illustrator, chiefly of books for girls published by Blackie, Warne and Macmillan’s. She was also a watercolourist and was elected a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours in 1896. In 1898 she married Henry George McMurdie and the couple lived in St Paul’s Studios, Hammersmith. She died in Worthing, in 1952, aged 90.

Amy Katherine Browning (nee Dugdale) was born in the Luton, Bedfordshire. She entered the Royal College of Art in 1899 where she studied under Gerald Moira. She became a friend of Sylvia Pankhurst and together they created an art exhibition for the Women’s Social and Political Union in 1909. She also provided illustrations for the Suffragist newspaper Dreadnaught. A British Impressionist artist, she painted, portraits and interiors, exhibiting regularly at the Fine Art Society, Royal Academy and Paris Salon. She is represented in many public collections.

George Sheringham (1884 - 1937)

United Kingdom Sheringham studied at the Slade under Henry Tonks and later in Paris where he held his first one-man exhibition in 1905. On his return to London he initially supported himself with poster designs and teaching. His first exhibition of fans was held at the Ryder Gallery in 1909 followed by another in the following year. With enthusiastic reviews in Studio he had launched his career as a decorative designer, theatrical designer and illustrator. His fans and fan designs became hugely popular, sometimes being painted on silk and made into fans but often the fan paintings where originally only intended to be framed and displayed. Works by him are in the collections of the Tate Gallery, British Museum, Fitzwilliam Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum and elsewhere.

Sheringham was born in London and studied at the Slade under Henry Tonks and later in Venice, Brussels, Berlin and Paris where he held his first one-man exhibition in 1905. On his return to London he initially supported himself with poster designs and teaching. His first exhibition of fan designs was held at the Ryder Gallery in 1909 followed by another in the following year. With enthusiastic reviews in Studio he had launched his career as a decorative designer, theatrical designer and illustrator. He illustrated books by Max Beerbohm and Cyrus MacMillan. In 1921 he collaborated with his brother Hugh on a book about fishing, The Book of the Fly Rod. He wrote Drawing in Pen and Pencil (1922), with James Laver, Design in the Theatre (1927) and with Rupert Mason and R Boyd Morrison he edited Robes of Thespis, Costume Designs by Modern Artists (1928). As a decorator, Sheringham designed the music room at 40 Devonshire House, the ballroom at Claridge’s Hotel and the Paris Exhibition of 1937. He was one of the first recipients of the Royal Designers for Industry distinction in 1937. He designed scenery and costumes for ballets, opera and the theatre, working closely with the actor-manager Nigel Playfair and for the D’Oyly Carte. A memorial exhibition was held at the Leicester Galleries in 1938. Works by him are in the collections of the Tate Gallery, British Museum, Fitzwilliam Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum and elsewhere.

United Kingdom Clifford was born in Bristol and studied at the Royal Academy. He painted and exhibited landscapes, portraits and historical subjects in oil and watercolour and had many aristocratic patrons. He was influenced by Burne-Jones and the group of artists who exhibited at Dudley gallery and the present watercolour is typical of his dreamy aesthetic works which led Philip Burne-Jones to write of him: “I think perhaps he is to be seen at his very best in his landscapes, into which he has always infused an atmosphere of romance and beauty as attractive as it was peculiarly individual. I know no other man’s work quite like it.”

Clifford was born in Bristol and studied at the Royal Academy. He painted and exhibited landscapes, portraits and historical subjects in oil and watercolour and had many aristocratic patrons. He was influenced by Burne-Jones and the group of artists who exhibited at the Dudley gallery and the present watercolour is typical of his dreamy aesthetic works which led Philip Burne-Jones to write of him: “I think perhaps he is to be seen at his very best in his landscapes, into which he has always infused an atmosphere of romance and beauty as attractive as it was peculiarly individual. I know no other man’s work quite like it.” Clifford visited Kashmir in 1888 on his way to Hawaii where he was to present the famous leper worker Father Damien with a picture from Edward Burne-Jones. He published his experiences in Father Damien; A Journey from Cashmere to his Home in Hawaii in 1889. This work, one of a group of six watercolours of Cashmere and India, was given by the artist to Wilson Carlile, founder of the Church Army. Clifford was honorary Secretary of the Church Army, an evangelistic Anglican society.
