The visionary and surrealist artist, Cecil Collins, was born in Plymouth were he was apprenticed to an engineering firm before winning scholarships to Plymouth School of Art (1924-7) and the Royal College of Art (1927-31). He married in 1931 and moved to Speen, north of High Wycombe where he met Eric Gill and David Jones. In 1933 he and his wife visited Paris, where they saw the work of Paul Klee and visited Gertrude Stein’s apartment. The present work, which is newly discovered, comes from this important early period when Collins held his first exhibition at the Bloomsbury Gallery in 1935 and first displayed the mystical element of his work. He contributed a painting and drawing to the International Exhibition of Surrealism at the New Burlington Galleries in 1936.
