Bateman was born in Kendal, Cumbria. He studied sculpture at Leeds School of Art and joined up at the outbreak of World War I. During the war he served with the Northumberland Fusiliers, the Machine Gun Corps and, from 1916, with the Artists Rifles. He suffered a serious gunshot wound to his spine and lungs and after the war decided to concentrate on painting rather that the less physically demanding life of a sculptor. Between 1919 and 1921 he studied at the Slade, becoming a Rome Scholarship finalist. After the Slade he took up teaching posts at Cheltenham Art College, Hammersmith School of Art and from 1929 at Goldsmith’s College.

At the start of World War II he worked as a Camouflage Officer for the Ministry of Home Security in Leamington Spa before taking up a commission for four paintings on land work subjects for the War Artists’ Advisory Committee. After the war he continued to paint and teach. He died in London from a combination of liver failure and pneumonia in 1959.

He exhibited at the Royal Academy, New English Art Club and was a member of the Cheltenham Group and the Cotswold Group. Bateman became a full member of the Royal Academy in 1942. Works by him are held in the collection of the Tate Gallery, Laing Art Gallery and Cheltenham Art Gallery & Museum.
